hardwood care Kernersville

Hardwood floors are a classic and beautiful addition to any home, but they are also a big financial investment. One of the benefits of a hardwood floor is longevity; with proper care and maintenance, it can sustain its stunning appearance for decades. Here are a few tips from the experts at Floor Coverings International Triad for avoiding the hardwood care pitfalls and maintaining beautiful floors!

Sweep Daily

For many of us, sweeping our floors is not a daily priority. Without visible dirt or debris, it can wait until tomorrow right? Not with hardwood floors. A little dust and dirt may seem harmless, but over time they can actually wear the finish on your floor. Sweep your hardwood every day to protect its shine.

Avoid Mopping

Mopping may seem like an effective way to ensure our floors are thoroughly cleaned, but excessive moisture is the enemy of hardwood. For a deep clean, use an approved hardwood cleaner and as little water as possible. Always ensure your floor is quickly and thoroughly dried to prevent accidental moisture damage.

Use The Correct Attachment

Vacuuming your hardwood is a great way to ensure you’re picking up all the dirt, but be mindful of the attachment that you use. A rotating brush is abrasive and will create noticeable scratches on your floor over time. Use a hardwood specific attachment, and turn off the brush roll off.

Rugs and Pads

Wear and tear on your hardwood is inevitable. Especially in high traffic areas like hallways or entryways. The best way to protect your hardwood in a high traffic space is to cover it up. An area rug will act as a protective barrier and extend the life of the wood. Be sure to also place a carpet pad to prevent slips, and avoid pads made of rubber or mesh. These materials can dull the finish and cause discoloration. We recommend using a rubber-felt pad instead.
