Having just celebrated another Earth Day, everyone here at Floor Coverings International of Piedmont Triad took some time to reflect on just how great our eco-friendly flooring options are. From cork to bamboo to recyclable carpet, we offer only the best in green flooring. But what about the rest of your home? In the spirit of Earth Day, we’ve put together a list of a few easy tips and techniques for lowering your carbon footprint and making your home a more environmentally friendly space. Read on to learn more about how you can easily add a bit of green to your home.

Make Your Appliances Go Green

When it comes to going green, one of the biggest changes over the past few years can be found in the appliance section of your local department store. Take, for instance, your refrigerator: appliance use comprises about 18% of a typical home’s total energy bill, with the fridge being one of the biggest energy hogs. If any of your appliances are more than 10 years old, consider replacing them with a newer, more energy-efficient model. Better yet, if you’ve currently got an extra, old refrigerator sitting in the garage, think about moving back to a single fridge. Not only will you save a bundle of cash, you’ll also be helping the Earth!

Keep An Eye On The Temperature

With the warm weather season nearly upon us, it’s good to consider strategies for managing your air conditioner’s energy use. Keeping your thermostat at 78°F during the hotter months will likely save you energy and money while not requiring you to sweat it out too much. Another tip is to plant shade trees on the east and west sides of your home to protect it from direct sunlight during the day. Also, consider tackling chores that require heat, such as running the dishwasher, after the sun has gone down.

Use Energy Efficient Lighting

This is probably the easiest tip to administer in your home, but it is sure to go a long way. Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) use 66% less energy than a standard incandescent bulb and last up to 10 times longer, making them both greener than standard bulbs as well as money-saving over the long term.

We wouldn’t be the best in flooring options if we didn’t remind you of all the great green products we have at our disposable. Cork is a wonderful example of a green flooring option, with the manufacturing process not requiring the loss of any trees. Similarly, bamboo is an incredibly sustainable product, so its harvest tends to have minimal environmental impact. Whether you’re looking for tile, carpet, hardwood, or laminate, Floor Coverings International of Piedmont Triad is sure to have a choice perfect for you.
