At Floor Coverings International Triad, hardwood is one of our most popular flooring options. This should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the many benefits of hardwood floors. Hardwood is durable, versatile, and adds timeless warmth to any room. Many of our customers in the greater Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point area ask us for tips on how to maintain their new, custom hardwood floors. Here are five tips for making sure your hardwood stands the test of time:
1. Sweep and Vacuum
The key to beautiful, scratch free floors is preventative maintenance. Dropping heavy objects is sure to leave dents and dings, but most of the damage we do to our hardwood can be avoided by keeping them free of dirt and debris. Over time, dust, soil, and grit wear away at a hardwood’s finish. Be sure to vacuum or sweep at least once per week.
2. Use Area Rugs and Floor Mats
Floors do not wear evenly. Area rugs can provide much needed warmth and comfort—especially in the winter months—as well as protect high foot traffic areas. Hallways are a great place for long rugs. Entryways should also be a prime target for floor mats.
3. Use Furniture Pads
Adhere felt furniture pads to the legs of your tables, couches, and chairs. This simple step can protect your floors from significant damage, especially from the chairs in your kitchen or dining room.
4. Keep Your Floors Pet-Safe
Dogs may be man’s best friends, but they wreck havoc on our floors. Our pets can coexist with hardwood if you take the necessary precautions. Make sure to keep your dog’s nails short and purchase a scratching post for Garfield. Pet hair can also wear away at your floors finish over time, especially if they have a favorite spot to nap. Invest in a pet bed to protect your hardwood; you’ll sleep better and so will Fido.
